Why Dry Ice?

Benefits of Using Dry Ice
At 109 degrees below 0, dry ice has proven effective in removing mold spores, bacteria, fungus, and many other winery associated problems. Barrel Blasting's process has also successfully removed or reduced TCA (Trichloroanisoles), Brettanomyces, and volatile acidity (VA) from contaminated surfaces.

Barrel Blasting uses dry ice that is 99.9% pure food grade and is the freshest and highest quality available.

Dry ice is Non Pollutive, Non Corrosive, Non Conductive, and Non Explosive. Dry ice blasting is an EPA, USDA and FDA approved process.

Dry Ice Blasting reduces or eliminates the need for toxic solvents resulting in less employee exposure and reduced corporate liability. Solvent reductions are necessary to comply with ever-changing environmental regulations and to improve worker safety. When removing hazardous material with other blasting media such as sand, glass bead, walnut shells, water, etc., both contaminant and blast material must be disposed of as toxic waste. Because Dry Ice sublimates on contact, no secondary waste is generated.

Most wineries use some form of hot water rinsing to clean barrels where a stream of hot, pressurized water is shot through the bung hole. Cleaning through the bung can miss some of the barrel's interior surface area and can leave behind bacteria hidden deep in the wood. Chemicals may be added to reduce the tartrates. This process does nothing to bring back any flavor. This method also uses large amounts of water, sometimes up to 25 gallons per barrel.

Barrel Blasting's process uses no chemicals. Since dry ice sublimates directly into Co2 gas, there is no waste water run-off, no chemical residue, and no off tastes.

Our Barrel Blasting's process sanitizes the barrel and opens up the grain for flavoring. For those wineries that like to ozone their barrels, after our blasting process is the perfect time to add ozone or S02 as these substances can penetrate deeper into the wood for good barrel maintenance.
